During the first three months of pregnancy, there is a failure to completely union the two lip segments, resulting in a variable extent of clefting of the lip.
Cleft lip and cleft palate results in failure of fusion of the two palatine shelves. This failure may be confined to the soft palate alone or involve both hard and soft palate.
Simply put, clefts are unexpected openings or gaps. They are often found on an infant’s lip and/or on the roof of their mouth (i.e. their palate). Cleft lip and palate affects 1 in 700 births. It is one of the most common birth anomalies worldwide.
Clefts develop in the first trimester of pregnancy when key tissues do not fuse. Some children are born with both a cleft lip and a cleft palate. Clefts may also be associated with specific syndromes.
Genetic and environmental influences are believed to trigger clefts in infants worldwide.
Children affected by clefts can experience life-limiting barriers to nutrition, speech, oral health, community inclusion, and more.
He was born in a Memon family on 25th March 1956 in Karachi. He did his Metric from St. Bonaventure High School, Hyderabad and FSc from Cantonment College, Hyderabad. He then shifted to Karachi for a medical degree, which he obtained in 1983 from Dow Medical College. After finishing their house job and doing rotations in different departments, he joined the Dept. of Plastic Surgery at Dow Medical College, Karachi, under the guidance and mentorship of Prof. Khalid Mehmood Durrani. He was admitted to MS Plastic Surgery, which he completed in 1992 at the University of Karachi.
His teaching career begins with the post of. Senior Registrar at his parent department, where he served from 1993 to 1996. From 1996 to Aug.2007, he continued to work as Assistant Professor. In August 2007, he took the post of professor of plastic surgery at his alma mater, from which he retired in March 2016.
