Dr.(Prof.) Muhammad Ashraf Ganatra was born in a Memon family on 25 th March,1956 in Karachi. He did his Metric from St.Bonaventur’s High School, Hyderabad and FSc from Cantonment College,Hyderabd. He then shifted to Karachi for medical degree which he obtained in 1983 from Dow Medical College. After finishing house job and doing rotations in different departments, he joined Dept. of Plastic Surgery, at Dow Medical College, Karachi . Under the guidance and mentorship of Prof. Khalid Mehmood Durrani. He got admission in MS Plastic surgery which he completed in 1992 from University of Karachi.
His teaching carrier begins with the post of. Senior Registrar at his parent department where he served from 1993 to 1996. From 1996 to Aug.2007 he continued to work as Assistant Professor. In Aug.2007 he took the post of Professor of Plastic Surgery at his Alma matter, from where he retired in March 2016.
Dr.Muhammad Ashraf Ganatra has 29 research published papers in different journals recognized by PMDC and HEC.He had extensive research on amniotic membrane and is
the strong promoter of use amniotic membrane in burns in Pakistan. Dr.Ashraf is the founder member of PAPS and main organizer of the first PAPS meeting that took place in Karachi in 1996. He also served his association as Treasurer, General Secretary and President. Currently he is the Trustee of the PAPS. He is also a life member of Society of Surgeons of Pakistan, Pakistan Medical Association and Memon Professional Forum.
He has presented scientific papers internationally at Malaysia, Thailand, Egypt and USA. and nationally at Karachi, Lahore, Hyderabad, Larkana, Sukkur, Quetta., Multan,Peshawar, Rawalpindi.
He had been involved in the care of the Patients of cleft lip and cleft palate since the year 2004. when he initiated the work of free surgeries in Karachi and held free surgical camps with the help of philanthropists in interior of Sindh. The first camp was in Sukkur in 2005 and last was in Hyderabad in Dec.2023. In total he had conducted 112 Cleft camps in Interior of Sind and Baluchistan. He had operated more than 5000 patients. At placses, that include Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Mithi, Umer Kot, Digri, Nawabshah, Tando Adam, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jacobabbad, Sukkur, Pano Aqil ,Gothki and
Naushero Feroz.
In Baluchistan he had done camps in Khuzdar, Hub and Turbat.
In Karachi he is doing free surgeries at Muskurahat Center and had operated more than 6000 patients during last 17 years totally free. He also trained one surgeon from Ethiopia in Cleft Craft.
He had also conducted various workshops for cleft management and cleft surgery teaching. He was also invited by Operation Smile (USA) to be a Volunteer surgeon to Mexico and Dominica Republic where he operated around 90 plus cases totally free.
He is the Supervisor, examiner, assessor and paper setter for the subject of Plastic Surgery of College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan and have produced six
fellows. He was also member of the benevolent committee; member of the Dow Social Forum of DUHS.
Currently he is a Professor of Plastic surgery at Liaqaut College of medicine and dentistry & Darul Sehat Hospital.
